Open a car door and run your hand along the trim, the glovebox, the cupholder, the seatbelt guide and the wiring behind the dashboard. Somewhere in that assembly are dozens of small black plastic clips holding everything in place. A Yokohama company called Nifco makes a large share of them — for Toyota, Honda, Volkswagen and Ford alike — and has built a highly profitable global business out of parts that cost a few yen each.

The company that industrialised the plastic fastener

Nifco was founded in 1967 to make industrial plastic fasteners in Japan — components that had previously been metal screws, rivets and clamps. The substitution logic was straightforward and it has held for nearly sixty years: a moulded plastic clip is lighter, cheaper, does not corrode, needs no separate washer, and can be designed to snap into place in one motion by an assembly-line worker or a robot.

That last property is why carmakers care. Assembly time is the dominant cost in a vehicle plant. A fastener that installs in half a second without a tool, and holds a trim panel without rattling for fifteen years, is worth far more to a manufacturer than its unit price suggests.

The EV question, answered simply

Most Japanese automotive suppliers face an existential question about electrification: what happens when the engine, transmission and exhaust disappear? For fuel-system components that risk is real. For the bulk of Nifco’s catalogue it is not, because interiors, trim, wiring routing and body attachment exist identically in a battery electric vehicle.

Two effects even favour it. Electric vehicles carry heavy battery packs, so every gram of weight reduction elsewhere in the body is valuable — which is the original argument for plastic over metal fasteners. And EV interiors have moved toward large displays, sensors and quiet cabins, which increases both wiring routing content and the requirement that nothing rattles.
