Photolithography is a printing process at nanometre scale, and every printing process needs a light source. Ushio has spent six decades making the lamps, excimer sources and laser-driven light modules that sit inside chipmaking, inspection and display production equipment — and it now sells the same core competence into cinema projection and hospital disinfection.

The light company

Ushio was founded in 1964 in Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture, originally to make incandescent and halogen lamps. That sounds like a business that should have died with the LED transition, and the consumer half of it largely did. What survived and grew was the industrial half: light with precisely controlled wavelength, intensity, uniformity and lifetime, produced for machines rather than rooms.

The company’s framing of itself is “light source solutions,” which in practice means a portfolio organised by physics rather than by industry.

Why semiconductors matter more than ever

The leading edge of logic manufacturing has moved to extreme ultraviolet lithography, where the light source is a plasma system supplied within a very narrow set of players. But the leading edge is only part of the industry. The overwhelming majority of installed lithography capacity — and the entire back-end of packaging, mask making, wafer inspection and display manufacturing — still runs on deep ultraviolet and ultraviolet sources of the type Ushio supplies.

Three demand drivers matter here:

Consumables, not just equipment

The structural attraction of the business is that lamps and sources are consumables. They degrade, they are replaced on a maintenance schedule, and the replacement is usually specified by the equipment maker. That gives Ushio a recurring revenue layer beneath the capital-equipment cycle — a very different earnings shape from a pure tool vendor.

Cinema and disinfection: the two visible businesses

Ushio’s acquisition of Christie Digital Systems gave it a position in digital cinema and large-venue projection, pairing its light-source expertise with a projector brand. It is a cyclical, box-office-sensitive business that looks unrelated to chipmaking but draws on the same core.

The more interesting adjacency is far-UVC. Conventional germicidal ultraviolet at 254nm damages skin and eyes, so it can only run in unoccupied spaces. Filtered 222nm krypton-chloride excimer light has been studied as an alternative that inactivates pathogens with far less penetration into human tissue, which would allow continuous disinfection of occupied rooms. Ushio commercialised products in this category and the underlying research has been pursued with academic partners including work originating at Columbia University. The science and the regulatory position are still maturing, and adoption to date is best described as early rather than proven — but the option value is real for hospitals, transport and public buildings.

The takeaway

Ushio survived the collapse of the lamp industry by moving from lighting rooms to lighting processes. It is not the company that makes EUV possible, and it does not claim to be. It is the one that supplies the far larger volume of ultraviolet and deep ultraviolet light that the rest of the semiconductor and display industry runs on every day.
