Kokuyo is the Osaka-based company behind the Campus notebook, one of the best-selling notebook series in Japan. Beyond stationery, it is a major supplier of office furniture and workplace design, and it runs a large business-to-business office supplies service. Today Kokuyo is looking to Asia, especially China, India and Southeast Asia, for its next stage of growth.

From Ledger Covers to Campus Notebooks

Zentaro Kuroda founded the business in Osaka in 1905, making covers for Japanese-style account ledgers. The name “Kokuyo” comes from the Japanese for “glory of the country”, reflecting the founder’s wish to bring honour to his home region of Toyama. Over the following decades the company expanded from ledgers into forms, filing products and other office paper goods.

In 1975 Kokuyo launched the Campus notebook, aimed at university and high school students. It became the standard notebook for generations of Japanese students, and the series has sold billions of copies. Kokuyo has kept updating the line with features such as dotted ruled lines that help users write neatly and keep diagrams aligned.

Three Businesses Under One Brand

Stationery

Notebooks, files, scissors, glue, pens and desk accessories for schools, homes and offices. Products such as the Campus notebook, Gloo glue and the Saxa scissors line are familiar in Japanese shops.

Furniture and Workplace Design

Office desks, chairs, storage and meeting room systems, together with design and consulting services for whole offices. Kokuyo treats its own offices as testing grounds. Its Tokyo base in Shinagawa, known as “THE CAMPUS”, was renovated and opened partly to the public in 2021 as a showcase for new ways of working.

Business Supply Distribution

Through its Kaunet service and other channels, Kokuyo delivers office supplies to companies across Japan. This gives the group a steady base of corporate customers alongside its retail brands.

The Asian Bet

Japan’s market for paper stationery is shrinking as the population ages and students and workers move to digital tools. Kokuyo’s answer has been to look abroad, where student numbers and office construction are still growing.

The company’s medium-term plans put overseas growth at the centre, alongside workplace consulting that connects furniture sales with office design.

Competition and Risks

In stationery, Kokuyo competes with low-cost local brands in China and India, which are strong in price-sensitive school markets. Chinese stationery makers such as Deli and M&G have grown into large companies with wide distribution. In office furniture it faces global firms such as Steelcase and Herman Miller, as well as Japanese rivals like Okamura and Itoki. Changes in office demand after the shift to remote and hybrid work also make the furniture market harder to predict.

Why It Matters for Overseas Partners

For distributors and retailers in Asia, Kokuyo offers established Japanese stationery brands with a reputation for quality and thoughtful design. For companies setting up or redesigning offices in Asia, Kokuyo provides both furniture and planning know-how drawn from its experience in Japan. For investors, it is a case of a mature Japanese consumer brand trying to turn domestic strength into growth in younger, faster-growing markets.

Conclusion

Kokuyo has spent more than a century supplying the paper and furniture that Japanese schools and offices depend on. With its home market maturing, the maker of the Campus notebook is now betting that students and office workers across Asia will value the same attention to detail. How well it competes with fast-growing local brands will decide whether that bet pays off.
